William Hill Bans Credit Card Deposits in Ireland
- February 18, 2022 By Riley Wilson -
William Hill will no longer accept credit card payments for online betting in Ireland. The giant gambling firm’s decision comes after the Irish Independent reports. According to Irish Independent, several major betting companies still accept credit card payments directly in Ireland. This is in contravention of the Irish Safer Gambling Code.
“It’s our ambition that nobody is harmed by gambling. We’re getting in touch to let you know that we will be voluntarily removing credit card deposits as a payment option,” the company said.
Starting this week they will not be accepting deposits from credit cards and they decided to inform their customers regarding the issue.
Other Claims
There are also claims that several firms that do not accept credit card bets do so indirectly through Apple Pay and Revolut.
Earlier this month, the newspaper agency disclosed that Apple and Google had provided Irish betting apps with a method to stop credit card gambling. Namely, through methods such as Apple Pay and Google Pay. However, at least one major local betting company is ignoring the measure.
Revolut stated that it would soon introduce technology to allow companies separate credit and debit card gambling deposits.
However, BetVictor still allows credit card deposits for Irish customers. The company does not allow credit card betting in the UK, where it is against the law.
Strict Regulations
The head of the Irish Bookmakers Association says that they have no power to sanction such actions since the Irish government has not officially outlawed them.
The Irish Government plans to introduce a new gambling regulator. The regulator will have the power to sanction betting firms for breaking the law. One of the measures that will be introduced is the ban on credit card betting. The regulator is expected by the end of 2022, or at the beginning of 2023.
