Australian Journalist Help Punters Land Winning Bets
- July 5, 2016 By Nemanja L. -
There is a good chance Sportsbet will think twice about quoting odds for another novelty bet after Australian journalist Laurie Oakes decided to help punters earn some easy cash.
The federal election held last Saturday has been quite tense with the winner has yet to be announced, and Paddy Power’s Australian division wanted to make things even more interesting by introducing a prop bet that requested the players to guess the colour of the tie Nine Network political journalist Laurie Oakes would wear in the election night.
The veteran broadcaster first appeared wearing a red tie, which must have been a blow for the punters who placed a bet on one of the other five options, but little did they know that they were all winners on the night.
Namely, Oakes also wore green, yellow, navy blue, black and grey & black ties during the coverage, making sure anyone who had placed a bet on the interesting market became a winner.
The experienced journalist was obviously aware of the prop bet and he decided to help the punters beat the bookies in their own game by wearing six different ties on the night in question.
Rather than complaining about what was clearly foul play, Sportsbet took the high road and paid out on all the bets to the delight of players who clearly needed an added excitement ahead of the election night.
Dangers of Novelty Betting
In similar news, UK Gambling Commission last week warned its license holders about the potential dangers of novelty markets, due to the fact that the result is usually clear before the official confirmation.
The UK EU Referendum was the latest novelty bet that attracted huge volume of wagers and while punters had initially backed Remain outcome, there were quite a few of those who took advantage of some very good odds and backed Leave just before the vote.
UK’s decision to leave the European Union is likely to have some repercussions on the online gambling market as well, and it remains to be seen how the leading operators will cope with the new developments.
