£44 Million Staked on US 2016 Election at Betfair
- September 27, 2016 By Nemanja L. -
The US 2016 Presidential Election is attracting a great deal of attention in all four corners of the globe and it would appear that not even gamblers can resist getting in on the action.
Said event is slowly becoming one of Betfair’s biggest ever political markets and the famous sport betting operator has now revealed that trading on the US Election has surpassed the £44 million mark.
Ahead of Monday’s live TV debate between Donald Trump and Hilary Cilnton, Betfair accepted around £2 million worth of bets on the two candidates, meaning the 2016 event has already seen more money placed on it than the 2012 Presidential Election.
Even though she was a strong favourite at 1/4 back in August, Hilary Clinton is now priced at 4/6, whereas Trump has been backed into 5/3, meaning he has 38% chance to be elected the US President.
Clinton Wins First Debate
This is widely believed to be one of the most bizarre US Presidential Races in history, and excitement is at a premium now that the market is set to react to the first live debate that was viewer by over 100 million people.
The CNN and other high-profile media believe that Hilary Clinton made some strong points during the debate and further improved her chances of winning the race after his popularity was on the downtrend following the Democratic convention.
With £44 million staked on the market so far, the US 2016 Presidential Election is now the second biggest political event at the Betfair Exchange, but latest predictions suggest that the market could be worth over £100 million by Election Day seeing that final weeks of the race tend to attract substantial wagers.
