Casino Mogul Steve Wynn Accused of Harassment
- January 29, 2018 By Oliver Young -
Steve Wynn is one of the biggest casino moguls in the US, alongside Sheldon Adelson. Wynn’s company Wynn resorts owns and operates a number of casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Wynn has been active in the gambling industry ever since the late 1960s. Later, the company expanded to other parts of the US, and all over the world.
Wynn was awarded a licence that allowed the company to open a casino in Massachusetts and the company is also active in Macau. Moreover, Wynn has been eyeing the Japanese market, following the announcement that Japan is set to legalise gambling.
Wynn has also been active politically, and despite the fact that he wasn’t in good relations with now President Donald Trump, he became the Finance Chairman of the Republican NC (National Committee) in February last year. It appeared that he and the President finally buried the hatchet and Nevadan Republicans were quite happy with his appointment.
Wynn Denies any Wrongdoing
Wynn has been seen by many as a controversial figure and he has had his fair share of scandals. However, the latest accusations that were laid against him, seem to be a lot more serious. Namely, Wynn has been accused of sexual misconduct. A number of women have stated that they have been assaulted or harassed.
Once of this cases ended in a settlement that cost Wynn $7.5 million, despite the fact that the company has stated that it operates in accordance with the highest ethical standards. Wynn has claimed that the accusations have to do with his divorce proceedings, claiming that the behaviour of his ex-wife Elaine is shocking.
The Republican National Committee, at first refused to comment, whereas the Democratic NC accused the GOP over their silence. Reports claim that many of his female employees were terrified of Wynn and on many occasions they went on to hide from him, when they knew that he was at the casino.
Wynn Resigned from Finance Chairman of the Republican National Committee
The pressure mounted and Steve Wynn finally resigned as Finance Chairman of the NC. The Chair of the Committee announced that his resignation has been accepted. There are calls for the Republican Party to return Wynn’s $2.4 million in donations that have been received in the course of the past 5 years.
Wynn still maintains that has not attacked anyone and that the allegations against him are unsubstantiated and without any foundations. Media outlets have announced that they will no longer be hosting Steve Wynn and the share price of Wynn Resorts fell dramatically last Friday.
Wynn previously was a bitter rival of President Donald Trump, as both of them owned and operated casinos. Both have said some pretty harsh words about each other, but later they became allies and Trump gladly promoted Wynn to the Financial Chairman of the RNC.
We are yet to see how the GOP is going to respond to the situation, considering that they criticised the Democrats for taking money from Harvey Weinstein, when the scandal regarding Weinstein was published. We are yet to see whether this will have any effect on the gambling industry as a whole.
