Italian Online Gambling Market Has a Bright Future
- May 3, 2018 By Riley Wilson -
It looks like the Italian online gambling market is becoming more and more popular with foreign-based operators.
According to the country’s gambling watchdog, the Agenzia delle Dogane e dei Monopoli (ADM), their number has gone up recently.
Popularity Increasing
ADM has announced that more than 80 gambling companies based outside of Italy have applied for a license. The regulator has also revealed that even those companies already offering their services to players in Italy will have to extend their current licenses, however, the ADM states that most of them have nothing to fear, since they have already passed the regulator’s scrutiny.
All those operators who get licensed by ADM will be able to operate in the Italian market until the end of 2022.
During the licensing process, AMD collected nearly $20 million, while the list of interested parties includes some of the biggest and most important names in the gambling industry, such as PokerStars, Luckia, Videoslots, and Lottomatica.
iGaming has become an important and very lucrative segment, which is demonstrated by the fact that a number of land-based operators have applied for an online gambling license.
A Lot of Potential
The local market has a great potential, especially since Italians love to gamble, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that many operators want a piece of the action.
Those who want to offer their services to players in Italy will need to obtain a license first. At this moment, around 100 online gambling operators are doing business in the country, while that number could even go up to 200 if ADM grants licenses to all applicants.
And in the meantime, the authorities are taking severe measures against people and organizations suspected of offering gambling services outside the law.
According to authorities, the ultimate goal is to create a safe online gambling environment, where players will have a wide variety of legal gaming options.
All applicants will need to pass the strict scrutiny of ADM, with a special focus on player safety. At the end of the day, everybody should win – the state will earn more money from gambling, while the players will be able to fully enjoy their gambling.
